The first mentioning of Mayran appears in the Charter of Louis the Blind, dated 896. In this document, the church of Saint Martin is stated as being situated near Old Mayran or Marianum Veterem (In "De la Maison du Père à La Maison Commune" by Elie Pélaquié). According to the etymologist Alain Nouvel, the name Mayran comes from Marianum, formed itself from the Roman name Marius and the suffix "anum".
